Makueni Governor Mutula Kilonzo Jr.

Makueni Governor Mutula Kilonzo Jr. has announced that 453 Early Childhood Development Education (ECDE) teachers who were on contract have been converted to permanent and pensionable positions.

The delay was due to budgetary constraints that would cover their salaries and allowances.

Mutula emphasised that the government is rewarding the hard work of the teachers, despite their low income.

He urged the national and county governments to treat and remunerate teachers well, as they play a crucial role in preserving the future and positively impacting young children.

The government has invested in building child-friendly infrastructure and providing essential materials for activities like music and digital learning in ECDE centres across the county.

Kenya National Federation of Farmers (KEFFA) Migori branch Chairperson Peter Chacha has called on the government to open National Cereals and Produce Board (NCPB) depots to facilitate maize purchases.

Chacha said that middlemen are already buying 90-kilogramme bags at Sh 1,200, which is too low, resulting in a loss of profit for farmers in the South Nyanza Region.

He also highlighted the challenges faced by farmers this year, including heavy rains and low maize yields due to fake fertiliser.

Chacha called on the Ministry of Agriculture to remove fake fertilisers from the market and encouraged the county government to work with the NCPB to open a branch in Nyatike Sub County to ease transportation costs for subsidised fertilisers.

The official also urged the county government to work with the NCPB to ease transportation costs for farmers.

The construction of a 11.8-kilometre stretch of the Kombololo-Tilankok-Kamaget-Kaboson Road in Chebunyo ward has commenced, estimated to cost Sh9.8 million.

The initiative is being spearheaded by the Ministry of Roads and Public Works, facilitated through the efforts of Chepalungu Member of Parliament, Victor Koech, also known as Mandazi.

Koech expressed satisfaction with the commencement of the project, stating that it is a pivotal development for Chepalungu, improving connectivity and accessibility.

Koech has committed to engaging the public in the supervision process to ensure transparency and effective implementation.

The construction is expected to enhance economic activities, ease transportation, and improve the quality of life for Chepalungu residents.

Kakamega Governor Fernandes Barasa

Kakamega Governor Fernandes Barasa has launched the Imarisha Afya Ya Mama na Mtoto programme to improve maternal and child health in the county.

The programme will support the first 35,000 enlisted expectant mothers with stipends, covering antenatal and postnatal milestones.

Each mother will receive a total of Sh12000 during their antenatal and postnatal milestones, and all babies will receive all necessary vaccinations.

The programme will start with cash transfer funds through mobile phones during their fourth antenatal clinic visit, followed by another Sh2000 when they deliver in the county health care facility and another Sh2000 when they take their baby for immunisation at 4 weeks after delivery.

The programme aims to remove financial and social barriers for mothers seeking health services.

The governor encourages expectant mothers to utilise the cash transfer funds to attend clinics, feed themselves and their babies with a balanced diet, and ensure all girls above the age of 9 receive the HPV vaccine to protect them from cervical cancer.

The investment in maternal healthcare and commitment of health workers have improved skilled delivery outcomes, with full immunisation coverage surpassing 82 per cent.

Kenya National Qualifications Authority (KNQA) has launched a five-year strategic plan focusing on the implementation of the Recognition of Prior Learning Policy (RPL) to curb unemployment in the country.

The plan aims to leverage KNQA’s strengths, capitalise on opportunities, and navigate challenges with resilience and agility.

Key areas of focus include the development of the National Qualifications Database, research and national policies on national qualifications, registration of qualification awarding institutions, mobility and progression of learners, and institutional strengthening through institutional capacity development.

The plan also aims to address the skills mismatch and unemployability in the country.

The plan will contribute to the realisation of objectives set forth in the Kenya Vision 2030, the government’s Agenda, the East Africa Community Vision 2050, the African Union Agenda 2063, and the United Nations Agenda 2030 for Sustainable Development.
