The Senate has faced accusations over its push to abolish the National Government Constituency Development Fund (NG-CDF).
Speaking to journalists in his office, Nyeri Town MP Maina Mathenge criticized certain Senators for advocating the national kitty’s abolishment.
Mr. Mathenge argued that the Senate should concentrate on its constitutional role of overseeing the 47 county governments.
He claimed that the Senate has failed to protect devolution, leading to rampant corruption and misappropriation of public resources.
The lawmaker noted that under the new constitutional dispensation, elected leaders have repeatedly clashed over control of the NG-CDF.
“Corruption in the counties has been consistently highlighted by the Auditor General, but the Senators have done nothing about it. They should fulfill the mandate for which they were elected. Their focus should be on the utilization of resources at the counties,” Mr. Mathenge said.
The MP also accused Kiambu Senator Karungo Wa Thangwa of interfering with the education function, which he argues is solely the responsibility of the National Government.
“Why do Senators want to talk about the NG-CDF while allowing Governors to allocate funds for secondary schools, universities, and colleges, which are National Government functions? Karungo Wa Thangwa should focus on overseeing the county government of Kiambu,” Mr. Mathenge said.
