The National Assembly Departmental Committee on Tourism and Wildlife yesterday held a sitting with the Department for Wildlife which had been summoned to appear to respond to Laikipia East constituency Mwangi Kiunjuri’s question following numerous cases of wildlife invasion in areas of Solio, Tigithi, Kihato, Umande and Mwituria among others in his constituency.
During the hearing, KWS acknowledged that there has been laxity from Private Conservancies in containing wild animals inside the protected areas, a situation that has caused untold agony to residents neighbouring these conservancies.
The meeting resolved to compel Private Conservators to erect proper fences especially in areas directly bordering settlement areas in order to contain the animals to avert further loss of lives and property.
Kiunjuri said, through the Kareke Mbiuki led committee, they will be seeking amendments to the Wildlife Conservation and Management Act, to hold private conservators responsible for damage caused by wild animals under their care.
