Kenya’s research and innovation sector has reached a pivotal moment with the commencement of the 7th annual National Science & Technology Exhibition, themed “Developing Sustainable Solutions for Climate Change.” The event, which has quickly become a cornerstone in the nation’s scientific calendar, showcases the transformative power of research in driving socio-economic development. With the active participation of the National Research Fund (NRF), the exhibition not only highlights the importance of innovation but also underscores Kenya’s commitment to advancing research as a key driver of its future prosperity.
The exhibition has attracted a diverse group of researchers, educators, and innovators, showcasing the country’s rapidly evolving research landscape. Over 200 students and 100 teachers from 390 schools—including special needs and refugee institutions—are participating in person, with an additional 1,300 students joining virtually. The broad participation underscores the exhibition’s goal of encouraging students to pursue careers in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) fields.
Chief of Staff and Head of Public Service, Felix Koskei, emphasized the exhibition’s importance in fostering meaningful dialogue and promoting growth through knowledge exchange. He pointed out that partnerships and collaboration in research are crucial for generating impactful innovations and driving Kenya’s socio-economic transformation. However, Koskei noted that greater private sector involvement is needed to fully harness the country’s research potential.
A key highlight of the event was the presence of the CEO of the National Research Fund (NRF), whose participation underscores the critical role the fund plays in Kenya’s research ecosystem. The NRF has been instrumental in supporting projects that address national priorities, including climate change. As the country seeks to increase its research expenditure from 0.4% to 2% of GDP, the NRF’s contributions are pivotal in scaling up research activities, fostering innovation, and building capacity.
Principal Secretary of the State Department of Higher Education, Beatrice Inyangala, echoed these sentiments, lauding the exhibition for taking science communication beyond traditional academic settings. She highlighted its role in engaging the public through informal platforms like science cafes and public lectures, which are vital for improving lives and building skills that contribute to Kenya’s economic development and global scientific progress.
The exhibition also serves as a moment to reflect on the future of the National Research Fund. Inyangala stressed the need to enhance efforts in capacity building to develop skilled researchers capable of advancing value chains that will fulfill the promise of Kenya’s economic transformation.
