Enhancing Security Measures In Educational Institutions: Lessons From Past Incidents

- According to previous reports proliferation of indiscipline in schools resulted to high School Fires in 2016, Kenyan authorities documented 130 cases of school burnings related to students’ unrest. 63 arson cases were reported in 2018. The multiple incidents in 2016 revealed a pattern of neglected fire safety standards. Many schools had outdated fire alarm systems, insufficient trained staff, and lack of coordination with local emergency services.
The tragic fire at Hillside Academy has once again underscored the urgent need for educational institutions to prioritize fire safety and security measures.
This incident echoes the devastating fires that have happened in Kenya many times. From Guardnow security group(K) ltd, we send sincere condolences to the parents who lost their children, all of us lost the future of our Nation, as the adults today we’ve borrowed this country from our children, we should be burdened to protect them…the incident is beyond words leaving everyone speechless, it’s very traumatic and deeply painful. The safety standards manual (2008) for schools developed by the then Minister Amb. Sam Ongeri has important standards that guide schools on safety. School safety no.12 is very clear on fire incidents. Under Article 239 of our constitution that establishes security regulations Act of 2016 gets security firms concerned about fires, according to the 2016 Act security providers have a role of protecting or safeguarding a person or property in any manner. Schools need protection and installing CCTV cameras is one way of manning every corner of a school plus installation of smoke detectors.

Schools need to develop and regularly update comprehensive emergency response plans as guided by the school safety manual of 2008. These plans should include clear evacuation procedures, designated assembly points, and roles for staff and students during an emergency.
