The African Institute for Health and Development (AIHD) a nongovernmental organization whose core mandate is to conduct research, training and advocacy in health and development issues relevant to Kenya and Africa, celebrated its 20th anniversary last Friday, marking two decades of transformative health initiatives across the continent. The milestone event, held at a ceremony In Nairobi, was graced by key figures from both government and civil society, all of whom lauded the organization’s efforts to improve public health outcomes in Africa. In addition to celebrating its achievements, AIHD used the occasion to launch its ambitious 2024-2029 Strategic Plan, which outlines its continued mission to create a dignified life for all Africans.

The Principal Secretary for Public Health and Professional Standards, Mary Muthoni Muriuki, delivered a keynote address at the event, reinforcing the government’s commitment to collaborating with AIHD on health matters. She noted that Kenya’s healthcare system must address pressing development challenges, including poverty, gender inequality, HIV and AIDS, social protection, and malnutrition. “Our goal is to address critical development issues such as health, social protection, HIV and AIDS, poverty alleviation, gender, nutrition, and health promotion,” Muthoni emphasized, underscoring the importance of AIHD’s work in aligning with Kenya’s national and international development goals.

Muthoni highlighted the institute’s critical role in advancing the health sector, noting that its initiatives directly support the goals laid out in the Constitution of Kenya 2010, Vision 2030, the Kenya Health Policy 2014-2030, and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). “AIHD’s work aligns with our national development goals,” she stated, adding that this partnership between government and civil society is key to achieving sustainable health improvements for the Kenyan population.

Since its founding in 2004, AIHD has been at the forefront of health development, employing evidence-based programming, conducting cutting-edge research, and advocating for inclusive health policies. The institute’s initiatives have reached millions of people across Africa, ensuring that health and development programs are effective, equitable, and sustainable. AIHD’s work includes addressing disparities in access to healthcare, promoting gender equity in health interventions, and fostering community-driven solutions to long-standing health challenges.

Dr. Patrick Amoth, Director General for Health, echoed these sentiments in his address, noting that AIHD’s contributions to public health over the years have been invaluable. He stressed the need for continued collaboration between the government and organizations like AIHD to build a robust healthcare system that addresses the needs of all Kenyans, especially the most vulnerable. ”AIHD has made significant contributions to public health in Kenya, and we look forward to continued collaboration,” said Dr. Amoth.

The event also featured remarks from AIHD’s founder, Dr. Mary Amuyunzu Nyamongo, and Executive Director Alice Sinkeet. Both leaders reiterated AIHD’s commitment to health equity and community empowerment, highlighting how the institute’s work has evolved over the past two decades to meet the changing health needs of African populations. They emphasized that the newly launched Strategic Plan for 2024-2029 will serve as a blueprint for the institute’s future endeavors, focusing on eliminating health disparities and fostering dignity for all through targeted interventions and community-driven initiatives.

AIHD’s new strategic plan builds on the organization’s long-standing mission to promote health and development by enhancing its focus on research, policy advocacy, and sustainable community interventions. It outlines specific areas of intervention, including maternal and child health, non-communicable diseases, and health system strengthening, all of which are designed to address the most pressing health challenges facing African communities today.

As AIHD embarks on its next chapter, the institute remains committed to its core values of equity, inclusivity, and sustainability. The 2024-2029 Strategic Plan reflects AIHD’s unwavering dedication to transforming health systems, empowering communities, and ensuring that every individual, regardless of their background or circumstances, can live a life of dignity.
