Ahead of the Mazingira Awards: Children Take Center Stage in Climate Action Discussion.

The First Lady Mazingira Award (FLAMA) hosted a Media Breakfast  bringing together journalists and stakeholders to emphasize the crucial participation of children in climate action. The event, held in anticipation of the inaugural First Lady Mazingira Awards ceremony on October 10th.

Chief guest of the event Principal Secretary of the State Department of Environment and Climate Action, Dr. Festus Ng’eno highlighted the  urgent need to amplify children’s voices in the climate dialogue.

The First Lady’s Mazingira Awards (FLAMA) media breakfast in Nairobi. The awards ceremony will take place on 10th of October 2024.

“We must listen to their voices, as they understand the challenges they face. They bring a unique perspective to environmental issues.”Dr. Ng’eno stated,

The discussions in the event  also  underscored the importance of raising awareness about the critical impact of climate change, particularly among children, who are among the most vulnerable populations, especially in Kenya’s arid and semi-arid regions. Despite their vulnerability, children have a remarkable understanding of these challenges, which adults often overlook.

The Organizers also  called for a collective effort to foster children’s engagement in climate advocacy, stressing that empowering young voices is essential for sustainable environmental protection.

The upcoming awards ceremony aims to recognize outstanding contributions by children and youth in climate action, serving as a platform to inspire greater participation in environmental stewardship.

The First Lady Mazingira Awards promise to celebrate the innovative ideas and actions of young climate advocates, reinforcing the message that every individual can make a difference in the fight against climate change.
