CS Joho Promises Compensation for Busia Fish Farmers Following Devastating Losses

The Kenyan government has announced that it will compensate fish farmers in Busia County following significant losses due to the recent death of thousands of fish in Lake Victoria. The assurance was made by Cabinet Secretary for Mining, Blue Economy, and Maritime Affairs, Ali Hassan Joho, during a press brefing in Nairobi, where he was accompanied by Busia Governor Paul Otuoma.
The incident, which saw an estimated 50,000 tonnes of fish perish, has left fish farmers grappling with substantial financial losses. The cause of the mass fish deaths is being attributed to a combination of extreme weather conditions and upwelling in the lake, according to local researchers.
Joho emphasized the need for resilience in fish farming practices, urging community-based organizations to develop more robust fish cages capable of withstanding extreme weather changes.
“We will have a conversation on what we need to do to sustain this kind of investment for the people. Our researchers have informed us there may be issues of placements.” He affirmed
The government is also investigating the best way forward to prevent such occurrences in the future and ensure the sustainability of fish farming as a key economic activity in the region. Governor Otuoma echoed Joho’s sentiments, underscoring the importance of protecting the livelihoods of fish farmers in Busia, he also stated that he has already allocated 1.3m for feeds and fingerlings to the Busia county farmers who suffered the recent loss.
Local fish farmers present, welcomed the compensation plan but called for more proactive measures to safeguard their investments in the face of increasingly unpredictable weather patterns.
