Principal Secretary for Interior Dr. Raymond Omollo has reiterated Kenya’s dedication to peace and stability during the launch of the Peacebuilding and Preventing Violent Extremism in East Africa Program.
Speaking at the event, he highlighted Kenya’s longstanding role as a peace advocate in the region.
“Kenya has long been a strong advocate for peace, and we have consistently prioritized development over conflict. Despite our special status, where we have comparatively maintained peace and stability more effectively than many in the East and Horn of Africa region, we still face our own share of challenges.” Stated Omollo.
The program, a collaborative effort among East African nations, aims to strengthen regional partnerships and create effective strategies to counter violent extremism and promote sustainable peace. He emphasized the importance of addressing the root causes of extremism, such as poverty, inequality, and lack of opportunities for youth, to prevent the spread of violence across borders.
“Kenya recognizes the crucial need to strengthen our national legal and institutional frameworks, enhance border controls, and promote regional cooperation. We are grateful for the support provided by our international partners in this regard, and we recognize the important role you play in helping us address the challenges of violent extremism.” Added Omollo.
His remarks come at a time when East Africa faces challenges from militant groups and growing regional tensions. He stressed Kenya’s active role in regional peace efforts, including its support for the African Union’s peace initiatives and United Nations peacekeeping missions.
“Our approach is not merely reactive; it is rooted in proactive development initiatives that empower communities, reduce vulnerabilities, and strengthen resilience. Kenya remains committed to promoting peace and security, and we will continue to work tirelessly towards achieving this goal, both domestically, regionally and internationally.” Omollo continued to say.
The launch of this program marks a significant step in East Africa’s unified approach to countering extremism, enhancing peace, and fostering regional development.
“The competition for natural resources and border disputes, especially in our arid and semi-arid regions, has similarly been a source of extremism. Our goal is a safer, more prosperous East Africa where peace and security form the bedrock for future growth.” He remarked.
In conclusion, Ps Omollo stated that Ministry of Interior appointed an Independent Panel of Advisors, comprising of thirteen distinguished Kenyan peace builders, to spearhead the national dialogue and formulate the New Agenda for Peace in Kenya.
