Former freedom fighters allied to Mau Mau War Veterans Association and their descendants have renewed their call for compensation and called upon the Kenya Kwanza Government to fast track the process by the British Government over atrocities meted on them during the freedom struggle.
The freedom fighters alleged that this year, King Charles handed over some crucial documents to the Kenyan Government which they allege was the list on how compensation should be done and so there is a need to fast track their compensation.
Speaking in Nyeri town, Nyeri County after a meeting, the war veterans led by Francis Mathenge from Kigwandi area, Tetu lamented that it was unfortunate that many of the freedom fighters had died without receiving their compensation for the torture and death they underwent during the struggle to liberate the country from the colonial yoke.
Mathenge believes that there is still a huge chunk of land still left nationally by the colonialists for compensation as many are still languishing in poverty.
“We are demanding our rights. The British Government has on three different occasions attempted to compensate the Mau Mau veterans, but their efforts have been frustrated by the former regimes that took a disinterested stand. President William Ruto is very willing to help us.” Said Johnstone Munyao from Makueni County.
Bishop George Kamunya of Oasis Grace Church added that as the descendants of Mau Mau, they are still following up the compensation and hoped that by the end of this January, they will have been compensated with lands.
Bishop David Kiarie pleaded with the current administration led by President William Ruto to unlock the stalemate to ensure the freedom fighters get their reparations.
Ms Norah Mathenge from Othaya lamented that she has been arrested several times since 2003 trying to follow up the compensation. Accompanied by other officials, they have visited many offices following up the compensation.
She added that they have been working under Jeremiah Mugi Foundation which is headed by James Njuguna Mahuria in a bid to assist their members in a bid to assist the former freedom fighters get their rightful dues.
The members noted that if the funds are released on time, they would greatly improve their welfare.
