In the recent months, there have been some tragic plane crashes that have put air travel safety into question. First, on December 29, 2024, a Jeju Air flight crashed into the area in South Korea and took 179 lives. In the second tragic event, a light aircraft crash-landed into Kenya’s coastal Malindi County and killed three people on ground level. Both cases bring about more necessity to apply preventive measures to minimize these risks of aircraft mishaps.
Causes of Recent Plane CrashesΒ
Human Error. The most probable cause of a plane crash; about 50% of plane accidents are due to human error. Mistakes made by either pilot, air traffic controllers, or ground staff could result in very disastrous results.
Mechanical Failures. Defects can cause failure of the aircraft system or its component, which results in loss of control or structural failure.
Weather Conditions. Bad weather conditions, including storms or even turbulence, make the take-off, landing, and flight itself difficult.
Bird Strikes. Collisions with birds can damage aircraft engines and lead to accidents.
Runway Excursions. Incidents where an aircraft veers off or overruns the runway during takeoff or landing.Β
Preventive Measures
- Better Training of Pilots. Putting in place well-structured and regularly updated programs to enhance the skills and decision-making abilities of pilot officers.
- Technological Advancements. Installing state-of-the-art avionics and navigational aids to support pilots and minimize the chance of human error.
- Regular Maintenance: A sound maintenance program, coupled with proper inspection and identification of mechanical problems.
- Air Traffic Control Enhancement: Upgrade air traffic control systems for effective communication and co-ordination between controllers and pilots
- Prevention of Bird Strike: Install bird-detection systems and habitat management around the airports to reduce the chances of bird strikes
- Runway Safety Enhancements: Improved lighting, signage and safety barriers that will reduce runway excursions.
By addressing these causes and applying the preventive solutions, the aviation industry will be working toward safer skies and less probability of future accidents. This is an ongoing process of improvement in technology, training, and safety protocols to ensure the well-being of passengers and crew.
