Serious differences have emerged among leaders from Deputy President Prof Kithure Kindiki’s home ground of Tharaka Nithi County.
The division is pitying the three sub-tribes;Tharaka, Chuka and Maara that are habitats of the county.
A section of members of the Tharaka Nithi County Assembly from Tharaka community have issued a stern rebuke to leaders from Maara and Chuka who they claim are jealous of Deputy President Prof Kithure Kindiki who hails from Mukothima in Tharaka constituency.

Addressing the media at Kathwana township, Chiakariga MCA Kinyua Njagi, popularly known as ZM, alongside his Igambang’ombe counterpart Njeru Ingara, hit out at Maara and Chuka leaders accusing them of not anticipating that the Tharaka community could produce such a distinguished national leader.
The two leaders pointed out that, despite Prof. Kindiki’s meteoric rise to Deputy President, some politicians from Maara and Chuka seemed caught off guard by his success and were now pretending to support him just to get a piece of the pie.
Kinyua stated, “They never thought Tharaka could produce such a prominent leader. We will defend DP Prof. Kindiki with all our might, and he should not listen to Governor Muthomi Njuki and his friends from Maara and Chuka.”
He further claimed that Governor Njuki, a prominent political figure from the county, had done little for the greater Tharaka community and had instead focused on developing Chuka where he comes from.
According to Kinyua, now that Prof. Kindiki has been appointed Deputy President, it is time for the Tharaka community to receive its fair share of development that it has lacked.
“The time has come for the Tharaka community to develop, and with Prof. Kindiki in the Deputy President’s seat, we will see real change. Governor Njuki has already developed Chuka, but now it is our turn,” Kinyua added.
MCA Ingara took a swipe at Governor Njuki’s perceived support for Prof. Kindiki, citing the absence of any public gesture, such as a congratulatory billboard across the county, following his appointment to the Deputy President’s office.
“Governor Njuki does not support Prof. Kindiki. He should have put up billboards across the county to congratulate him on his appointment and not just claiming to support him. This shows his true intentions,” Ingara claimed.
The leaders also hinted at future plans to ensure that key political positions—such as the Governorship, Women Representative, and Senator—be taken by the Tharaka community in the 2027 elections, a move they argue is essential for ensuring the region also develops.
“With Prof. Kindiki as Deputy President, it is time for the Tharaka community to shine. Governor Njuki only pretends to love Prof. Kindiki just for political convenience,” said Ingara.
The remarks come amid growing political tension in Tharaka Nithi County, as local leaders jostle for influence in the wake of Prof. Kindiki’s elevation to the national stage.
While the Tharaka community seems to fight to own their son Prof Kindiki, the rivalry with leaders from Maara and Chuka appears set to intensify as the 2027 elections approach and is likely to soil the good name of DP.
The rise of power brokers from the Tharaka community who claim to be too close to Prof Kindiki have already succeeded in dividing the small county into two with Chuka and Maara being kept off from DP.
Local observers believe that this assertion of “ownership” of Prof. Kindiki by a section of Tharaka community leaders may signal the beginning of a shift in the county’s political dynamics and buildup of political animosity.
With the Deputy President in the national limelight, all eyes will be on Tharaka Nithi as it seeks to leverage its newfound prominence for future political gain and how the DP manages his fighting backyard.
