Wiper’s Kalonzo Slams Government Over Alleged Illegal Sale of Retirees’ Property

Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka has joined the Association of Kenya Railways Retirees (AKERARE) in their protest against what they term as the illegal occupation and sale of their land along Valley Road, Nairobi.
The contested property, identified as Land Reference Number 209/1064/1, 2, 3, 4 & 5, has been at the center of a dispute involving the retirees, private developers, and state authorities.
Musyoka condemned the move, stating, Ruto’s administration is creating poverty but stealing from the Kenya railways retirees .
“This is a government that is creating poverty from the bottom up stealing from poor retirees. How much land can one person possibly own? The Ruto regime isn’t concerned about the ageing retirees who were sent home by the Kenya Railways Corporation without their pension. Kenya Railways, pursuant to a Cabinet Memo, vested this property in their Retirement Scheme,” he stated.
He also continued to say that a person high up in the Kenya Kwanza government has grabbed the property, chasing the poor pensioners out of their property on Valley Road, which is now under police protection as the “private developer”.
“We demand that this property and many others that have been grabbed and illegally occupied be handed back to their rightful owners. Restore their dignity. We also demand that William Ruto leave all public property alone. How much is enough? End this practice of wanton greed and blatant theft,” Kalonzo continued to say.
On Thursday, March 13, the retirees attempted to reclaim the land, only to be met with resistance from the Kenya Police, who disrupted their efforts under what they described as “orders from above.” The officers reportedly provided security for the ongoing demolition of structures on the land while preventing the pensioners from accessing the property.
The affected retirees, most of whom served Kenya Railways for decades, claim they were sent home without their pensions. In 2006, through a Cabinet decision, the government vested the Valley Road property in the Kenya Railways Staff Retirement Benefit Scheme to generate funds for their long overdue dues.
However, they were recently shocked to discover that a powerful individual within government circles had allegedly grabbed the land, saying that the property is now under police protection as a “private developer” demolishing houses belonging to the pensioners.
Documents from AKERARE indicate that the Kenya Railways Staff Retirement Benefit Scheme legally sold the land in 2014 to the highest bidder, Mahadi Investment Limited, for Kshs. 400 million. The company reportedly paid an initial Kshs. 200 million, with the balance to be settled upon the provision of completion documents. However, the Kenya Railways Corporation (KRC) allegedly failed to provide the required documents, stalling the transaction and leaving retirees in limbo.
They now accuse KRC of using its police unit to unlawfully seize the property and install a new, unidentified occupant. “For 10 years, Mahadi Investment Limited has been waiting for completion documents. Instead, KRC forcefully evicted those on the land, demolished structures, and introduced strangers to the property,” reads part of AKERARE’s statement.
With the Wiper leader’s involvement, the matter has gained significant political attention, adding pressure on the government to clarify the fate of the Valley Road property.
