Female genital mutilation procedure is set by the tradition of the community that practices it. To them it’s necessary to ensure that one fits in the society, because men would marry a woman who does not undergo the process. The society also believes that female genital mutilation controls women’s sexuality and one is only accepted as an adult if she’s mutilated.
FGM has no health benefits, to both girls and women. It can course severe bleeding, and problems urinating, infections as well as complications during child birth and increased risk of newborn deaths .According to World Health Organisation (WHO), 200 million Women alive today have undergone the process in 30 countries in Africa. It’s always carried out on young girls between infancy to age of 15 .The WHO is opposed to o all types of FGM and to health care givers performing the act .
Let’s raise an awareness about the issue, we can do this by bring people we know like friends and family, schoolmates and community and start a conversation on the effects and ways to end this among them. You can also share the information on social media platforms us the hashtag #End FGM, like Facebook, twiter, Whatsapp groups and instagram. We can also use billboards, radio, Tv and posters. We can also find this kind of activities to help promote the awareness; we can be founders of NGOs set to end FGM.
