Ministry of Interior and Coordination of National Government want Chiefs to exercise neutrality as they carry out their duties during the electioneering period.
At the same time, the government want them to ensure that no political meeting takes place in their areas of jurisdiction without the security officers nod.
The two issues will ensure the country remain peaceful during campaigns time whose climax is August 9th.
In a move which could spark protests from politicians, Cabinet Secretary Fred matiang’i said that no meeting should take place if the station commanders have not given a go ahead after organisers notify them .
“As way of maintaining peace in your area you must ensure that those holding meetings in your areas have notified police in good time and they have been given a go ahead by station commanders. This will ensure that no chaos will be witnessed in the country as politicians joster for votes,” observed Matiang’i.
The CS was speaking during Chiefs Forum at Carits Centre near Nyeri town yesterday where urged them to be politically neutral but firm in matters of law.
“As law enforcers you should not be politically bullied by these politicians. You are assured of our protection and let nobody intimidate you that you will be sacked if you do not tie their line. Implement goverment policies as per your mandate and law” said Matiang’i.
His order comes at a time politicians, especially from United Democratic Alliance (UDA) have been complaining the government was using State machinery to intimidated voters to lean towards their rivals Azimio la Umoja.

On insecurity in some counties, the CS proposed to the chiefs to consider using alternative methods to solve some disputes.

“Chiefs in Baringo, Elgeyo Marakwet, Samburu and other counties experiencing violent conflicts should prioritize peace talks and initiate resource-sharing talks especially where conflicts are around land, pasture and water ” said Matiang’i.
