Nyeri residents have protested a move by a business entity to paint a national museum, advertising private enterprise.
The painting of a gazetted memorial monument has angered among Nyeri residents and visitors, particularly those in scouting movement due to its association with the movement founder Lord Baden Powell.
The memorial stone is gazzetted by museum alongside Paxtu, which was the Powell’s last residence.

The monument, situated at the junction of Kimathi Way and Kanisa road in Nyeri town was designed by Powell and was constructed by Mr Sehmi Sighn and is supposed to be cleaned by brushing not to be painted or written and advertising of any kind.
what it purpose is for the sojourners to check time and have free water to drink as it has a clock and water tap.
The monument stands about 200 metres from the Powell’s grave site that attracts thousands of scouts and girl guides every year. It is also about two kilometres from Paxtu which is based at Outspan hotel.
Among those who voiced their concern over the issue is former Scouts regional Commissioner Kimita Gathii and Martin Muteru, a member of the scouting movement.
“This is ignorance of the highest order. A world famous monument has been defiled through shortsightedness. Scouts and Guides are deeply saddened by this act,” Gathii noted.
He said those behind the painting should be forced to remove the advertisement and return the monument to its original status.
On his part, Muteru said, “it’s disheartening to see someone painting it and advertising on it as it’s supposed to be always original. Please act by asking the person who did it to remove the paint and have it clean before international outcry comes.”
Paul Mwangi, a resident of Nyeri said Nyeri people might be forced to sue the entity behind painting of the monument if they failed to heed to the call of ensuring it reverted to its original status.
