The Government has issued a warning to politicians making remarks that could fuel tension and division in the country.
Speaking through Government Spokesperson Isaac Mwaura, the administration expressed concern over comments made by Nyeri Governor Mutahi Kahiga, terming them disrespectful and out of place at a time when the nation is mourning the death of former Prime Minister Raila Odinga.
Mwaura said the government found the governor’s remarks “unpatriotic and regrettable,” noting that such utterances threaten the unity the country has worked hard to maintain.
“This is a moment of reflection and national healing. The late Raila Odinga was a statesman whose contribution to Kenya’s democracy will be remembered for generations. Any language that divides rather than unites is not only insensitive but dishonors his memory,” he said.
He added that President William Ruto’s leadership has demonstrated inclusivity by ensuring that all counties receive equitable development support regardless of their political affiliation.
“The President has made it clear that every Kenyan matters. Development is reaching every part of the country because leadership today is not about who voted where, but about serving all people,” Mwaura remarked in the statement
The spokesperson called on leaders from all sides of the political divide to put the nation first and avoid statements that could incite communities against one another.
“Kenya belongs to all of us. Leaders may differ in opinion, but they must never forget that their words carry weight. We urge all to speak peace, unity, and respect,” he added.
He also welcomed the resignation of Governor Kahiga from his position as the Vice Chairperson of the Council of Governors, saying it was the honorable thing to do under the circumstances.
He further called on relevant agencies, including the National Cohesion and Integration Commission (NCIC) and the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), to take firm action against any leader found spreading hate speech or promoting ethnic division.
“The law is clear on this matter, and we expect full enforcement. No one should imagine that they are above it,” the government spokesperson urged.
The government reiterated its commitment to protecting Kenya’s peace and stability, urging citizens to reject divisive politics and instead honor the late Odinga’s legacy through unity and respect for one another.
