Chiefs and Sub-County police bosses allowing in herders from Isiolo County risk being sacked, Meru Governor Kiraitu Murungi has warned.
Kiraitu’s statement comes a month after he issued a ban preventing Isiolo herders from crossing over to Meru side in search of pastures and water following a banditry attack that led to killing of nine people at Mweronkoro.
The Meru governor has directed residents and leaders living in northern parts of Meru to forward names of Chiefs and police bosses alleged to allow Isiolo herders and camels to cross over to Meru County. Kiraitu threatened to call for sacking of the chiefs and police bosses reported to have ignored his directive to ban camels from Isiolo to cross over to Meru.
Mr Kiraitu was responding to concerns raised by Athwana MCA Victor Karithi Mutuma over camels alleged to be from Isiolo were spotted on Wednesday at Kandebene in Tigania region.
“We are surprised to hear that the camels are back. During our meeting with the County Commissioner, police bosses and other leaders it was agreed that no chief or police boss should allow camels from Isiolo to cross to Meru County. We agreed that those who allow the camels to cross should be sacked,” Kiraitu said.
The Meru Governor said they will push for shifting of military camp from the disputed Tigania East lands to the Meru-Isiolo border as a way to curb banditry attacks.
The Meru Governor was speaking on Wednesday during the issuance of Emergency Locust Response Project (ELRP) Sh 37.6 Million cheque to community driven development committee (CDDCs) in Meru town.
Increased banditry attacks in Northern regions of Meru has led to mixed reactions forcing leaders to criticize the administrators and police officers over inefficiency to curb banditry attacks.
Last Month Tigania East MP Gichunge Kabeabea said despite his efforts to build several police posts along the buffer zones at Isiolo border and Tharaka Nithi County, police officers have not been posted to the stations.
