NEWS IN BRIEF 2 DECEMBER 2025

Former Kieni Constituency MP Muruthi Muriithi (pictured) died over the weekend at his Nairobi home. He is said to have collapsed as he was preparing to take breakfast and was pronounced dead at Karen hospital. He won the Kieni seat in the controversial 1988 Mlolongo election but lost it in 1992 to David Munene Kairu of DP. He was the Kanu party candidate. Muriithi, 75, made his debut in electoral politics in 1979 election cycle and vied for Nyeri constituency but lost to Waruru Kanja. Between 1988 and 1992, he was Nyeri Kanu branch secretary while former president, the late Mwai Kibaki was his branch chairman.

A recent study in Kenya, Uganda, and South Africa has found that a long-acting injectable HIV treatment, Cabotegravir/Rilpivirine (CAB LA + RPV LA), administered every two months, is safe, well-tolerated, and preferred by most patients. Conducted over 24 months, the IMPALA study, supported by the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine and funded by Janssen Pharmaceuticals, highlights the potential of injectables to improve adherence and reduce HIV-related deaths. Unlike daily oral pills, which remain Kenya’s first-line treatment but can be challenging for young and marginalized populations, the injectable simplifies therapy while remaining as effective as standard treatment. Dr. Loice Ombajo (pictured), Kenya’s principal investigator, said this innovation could accelerate progress toward UNAIDS 95-95-95 targets by 2030. By reducing the burden of daily medication, long-acting injectables could improve quality of life for people living with HIV, re-energize the global HIV response, and ensure that no patient is left behind.

Principal Secretary for the State Department of Irrigation Ephantus Kimotho yesterday hosted a German delegation led by Mr. Yannic Kiewitt, Country Officer for Kenya at the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ). The meeting was part of ongoing preparations ahead of the biennial Government-to-Government (G2G) Consultations, providing a platform to align Kenya–Germany cooperation on irrigation, climate resilience, and agricultural transformation.

Key discussions focused on expanding the Smallholder Irrigation Programme from Mount Kenya to Western Kenya, and scaling the Drought Resilience Programme Phase II to support five additional ASAL counties. Plans for an Irrigation De-risking Fund were also discussed, aiming to attract private sector investment and reduce financial risks for farmers.

The PS emphasized the role of market access solutions and County Aggregation and Industrial Parks in enhancing value addition, while reaffirming the government’s commitment to putting one million acres under irrigation. Mr. Kiewitt highlighted Germany’s continued focus on climate action, drought resilience, and irrigation development.

At the Cooperative University of Kenya, Cabinet Secretary Wycliffe Oparanya inaugurated the National and County Steering Committees under the Revival of Coffee Through Cooperative Societies Programme. The initiative brings together county governments, cooperatives, development partners, the private sector, universities and National Government Administrative Officers to advance Kenya’s coffee transformation agenda. New KPCU supports farmers by distributing certified seedlings, providing financing through the Coffee Cherry Advance Revolving Fund (CCARF), delivering agronomy training, offering efficient milling and marketing services, and promoting youth engagement. Anchored in BETA, the programme aims to boost productivity, incomes, exports, and sustainable rural development, putting farmers at the heart of every reform.
