The State Department for Housing and Urban Development (SDHUD) has taken a major step forward in its Affordable Housing Programme with the official handover of key social amenities at the New Boma Yangu Mukuru Housing Estate. Principal Secretary Charles Hinga presided over the ceremony, describing the development as a milestone that sets the stage for the upcoming handover of 5,000 newly completed housing units by the President.
The facilities unveiled are designed to ensure that residents of the estate enjoy a dignified and self‑sufficient lifestyle. Among them is a fully equipped Early Childhood Development Education (ECDE) and Daycare Centre, which will provide young learners with a strong foundation while supporting working parents. The inclusion of such educational infrastructure underscores the government’s commitment to nurturing future generations within safe and accessible environments.
Economic empowerment has also been prioritized through the establishment of a modern strip mall. The mall offers spaces for local businesses including cybercafes, eateries, coffee shops, and clothing stores. This initiative is expected to stimulate entrepreneurship, create jobs, and enhance convenience for residents by bringing essential services closer to home.
Healthcare access has been strengthened with the opening of a new outpatient centre and dispensary. Residents will now benefit from timely medical attention without the need to travel long distances. This facility is complemented by enhanced safety measures, including an in‑house police post and a fire station. Together, these institutions provide a robust framework for security and emergency response, ensuring that the community feels protected and supported.
Speaking during the handover, PS Hinga emphasized that the Affordable Housing Programme is not merely about constructing houses but about building holistic communities. “We are creating neighbourhoods where families can thrive, with access to education, healthcare, safety, and economic opportunities right at their doorstep,” he said.
The Boma Yangu Mukuru Housing Estate represents a model for future developments under the Affordable Housing Programme. By integrating social amenities with housing, the government aims to transform urban living standards and reduce inequalities in access to essential services.
As the nation awaits the President’s official handover of the 5,000 housing units, the delivery of these amenities signals a new era of inclusive urban development. For many families, it is the promise of a brighter, more secure future within a community designed to meet their everyday needs.
