- Parents should try to accept the situation and avoid reacting in anger. It’s important to enhance a good relationship with your parent/guardian, for incase such situation occurs; it will be easy to speak out.
Having a baby in college can be stressful, but you can be successful while pregnant especially when in good communication with the lecturers. A student have the right to stay in school if she becomes pregnant without being kicked out, since it’s the violation of pregnant girl’s right to equality, basic education, human dignity and privacy to prevent them from attending classes. It is a wise idea to take a semester off while the baby is newborn and resume once the newborn turns, not less than three months.
Before engaging in a relationship, it would be better to have a talk with your partner for plans to undertake in case things get out of hand. It’s advisable to decide on methods to use to avoid parenting at an early age. There is no family planning method proven to be fully effective, but it’s better to be on the safe side. Abstinence is the only birth control method that’s 100% effective and also the best in protection against STD’s. If you must have sex, use condoms, stay safe.

Most students are left to take care of the baby on their own, which becomes hard to balance between education and motherhood, resulting to irregular school attendance and poor performance. Some students tend to terminate their education for fear of shame, stigmatization and ridicule from the school and society, and being rated as ill-mannered students. Society should try to give counsel to the young mothers instead of judging and discouraging them.
It’s also important to have supportive friends whom you can share your problems especially those related to being a mother for the first time.
Joan (not her real name), a student in a certain institution, had this to say, “Lack of support especially from the parents and your man makes it hard for you to proceed. I had a supportive man who stood with me during the pregnancy journey. His family was supportive and until today, we share responsibilities.” do not listen to what people say, their opinions should not matter to you.”
