After the historic signing of Azimio la Umoja coalition agreement on Saturday, individual political parties have retreated to strategise.
In the vote rich Mount Kenya region at least five parties are jostling for aspirants and subsequent win in various seats political seats which will be up for grabs during the General Election on August 9.
Sources intimate that though President Uhuru Kenyatta who is also the Jubilee party leader has unsuccessfully attempted to erase from the regional map other parties and would have liked all to be Jubilee; some parties are coming out strongly despite being unveiled just a few months ago.
Some are being embraced more, depending on whose leadership there are under.
Such parties are like Nakuru County based Ubuntu Peoples Forum (UPF) party whose party leader is area Governor Lee Kinyanjui.
The party has been embraced in not only Mt region but also in most of the parts of the country.
Particularly, those in other parts of the country bit originally hail from the region have totally embraced it and are yearning to be on the ballot paper under it’s sponsorship.
According to the party’s Executive Director, John Gakunga, they have candidates in all elective seats in Nakuru County where the party leader Lee Kinyanjui is defending his gubernatorial seat.
They also have identified dozens of aspirants from other counties.
Speaking after he held an aspirants consultative meeting in Nyeri, Gakunga said the party is expecting to bag scores of various seats, save for presidential one where they are supporting ODM leader Raila Odinga.
The Nyeri meeting brought together aspirants from Mt Kenya region where they were taken through the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) requirements ahead of party nominations and subsequent presentation of nomination papers to the electoral body.
Gakunga said that apart from election matters, they also discussed regional residents’ expectations in the new government which include assurance of Minimum Guarantee Return for various subsectors like coffee, tea, rice, horticulture among others.
The Executive Director assured them that the issues they had raised were Governor Kinyanjui’s pet subject and that he was sure they will fully be addressed once the new government is formed.
Other parties that have ground support in the region include Jubilee, Party of National Unity (PNU), The New Democrats (TND), Chama Cha Kazi (CCK), Democratic Party of Kenya (DP) and People’s Empowerment Party (PEP).
