Former senior officials of retired President Uhuru Kenyatta’s The National Alliance (TNA) have unveiled a new political outfit, setting the stage for a fresh presidential bid in next year’s General Election.
Former TNA Secretary General Onyango Oloo and the party’s former Executive Director Joseph Mathai on Saturday launched the Freedom and Opportunity Party (FOP) regional office in Sagana, Kirinyaga County, where they announced that Oloo will fly the party’s presidential flag while Mathai will be his running mate.
The launch attracted hundreds of supporters and party officials, with the leaders presenting FOP as an alternative political movement that they said would champion the interests of ordinary Kenyans.
Oloo appealed to the Mt Kenya region to support his presidential bid, saying the region should reciprocate the political support he had previously extended to its leaders. He argued that a renewed partnership between the Luo and Kikuyu communities would strengthen national unity and provide stable leadership for the country.
He said a government led by FOP would focus on reducing inequality, eliminating tribal politics and creating opportunities for all Kenyans.
“Unlike others, our government will establish a system that transforms lives and bridges the gap between the poor and the rich,” Oloo said after he was ceremonially installed as a Kikuyu elder during the event.
He maintained that tribal politics had held the country back for decades and pledged to promote merit-based leadership and inclusive economic growth if elected.
Mathai, who also previously served as Executive Director of KANU before joining TNA, said his political experience would help steer the country towards economic transformation and improved livelihoods.
He declared that FOP had joined the growing “one-term” campaign aimed at unseating the Kenya Kwanza administration, accusing the current leadership of failing to meet the expectations of Kenyans.
“We are offering Kenyans a fresh beginning. Our party will field candidates in all elective positions across the country,” Mathai said.
He added that the party was steadily building grassroots support, in all parts of the country and expressed confidence that Oloo’s candidacy would attract national backing.
“Our presidential candidate from Kisumu County will continue the journey that Raila Odinga began in climbing the mountain,” Mathai said, in reference to efforts to strengthen political ties between the Luo and Kikuyu communities.
Some of the party’s national leadership include Antony Kaara who is the National Chairman, George Oketch Secretary General, Magdalene Nzuuma National Treasurer and Dean Anindo as Executive Director.
FOP, whose slogan is “Together we rise, together we prosper,”and a Compass as it’s symbol says it is founded on the principles of inclusive capitalism, meritocracy and national unity, with a focus on expanding economic opportunities while reducing inequality.
