KTDA invites transporters to move tonnes of fertilizer to tea factories

The Kenya Tea Development Agency (KTDA) has invited transport service providers to take up contracts for the transportation of 99,000 tonnes of imported fertilizer from Nairobi to its managed tea factories ahead of the arrival of the first consignment in August.
In a notice issued by KTDA Management Services Limited, the agency said the importation process for the fertilizer, packaged in 50-kilogramme bags, has been completed and deliveries to tea factories will begin once the consignments arrive in the country.
The notice follows a transport tender advertised in April this year. KTDA said it has completed the evaluation process and approved transport rates of KSh17.79 per tonne per kilometre for factories in Zone A and JSh15 per tonne per kilometre for factories in Zones B and C, inclusive of VAT.
Transporters who participated in the tender and are willing to accept the approved rates have been asked to collect and sign contract documents at the office of the Head of Field Services and Agriculture in Nairobi.
The agency said the actual arrival dates of the fertilizer consignments will be communicated to the contracted transporters.
To qualify, transporters must provide a list of trucks to be used in the exercise, copies of valid logbooks or lease agreements for leased vehicles, and ensure the trucks have a minimum carrying capacity of 15 tonnes.
The vehicles must also comply with all government requirements for commercial transport, including valid third-party insurance, relevant licences, vehicle tracking systems and speed governors.
In addition, transport crews will be required to present certificates of good conduct, while transporters must obtain a fidelity guarantee cover through or validated by Majani Insurance Brokers Ltd.
KTDA noted that it is not obligated to award contracts to all transporters and will allocate transport assignments to individual factories based on operational workload.

“To facilitate the timely delivery of fertilizer to farmers at their designated collection points, we hereby invite bids from qualified transport service providers for the provision of efficient transportation services during the month of August,” Njeru said.
The annual fertilizer distribution programme is a key component of KTDA’s support to smallholder tea farmers, ensuring timely access to farm inputs that help improve tea productivity and quality.
The agency manages dozens of tea factories serving hundreds of thousands of tea growers across the country.
