Over 1,000 turn up for Nyeri health camp as county steps up men’s wellness drive

More than 1,000 men turned up for a male-only medical camp in Nyeri County on Saturday, underscoring growing interest in initiatives aimed at improving men’s health and encouraging early medical check-ups.
The annual Male-Only Engagement and Medical Camp, held at Muthuaini Girls Secondary School, attracted participants from across the county who accessed a wide range of free health services.
Organised by the Nyeri County Department of Medical Services and Public Health, the day-long event offered cancer screening, diabetes and hypertension tests, urology consultations, tuberculosis screening, chest X-rays, mental health counselling, eye care, dental and ear, nose and throat (ENT) services, physical disability assessments, as well as health education. Participants also received financial literacy and legal awareness training.
Nyeri Governor Mutahi Kahiga, who attended the event, said the strong turnout reflected increasing awareness among men about the importance of seeking timely medical care.
He noted that the programme was introduced to address concerns over the physical, mental, social and economic wellbeing of men and boys, a group that often delays seeking treatment until illnesses become severe.
According to the governor, the initiative has continued to grow following the success of the inaugural camp held last year at D.E.B. Muslim Primary School.
Kahiga said an estimated 1,100 men attended this year’s event, with about 900 receiving various medical services and health consultations.
He reaffirmed the county government’s commitment to making the camp an annual event, saying it provides a safe platform for men to access quality healthcare, receive health education and discuss issues affecting their overall wellbeing.
Health officials described the turnout as encouraging, expressing optimism that such targeted programmes will help improve men’s health-seeking behaviour and contribute to the early detection and management of lifestyle and chronic diseases.
