Kiraitu defends his track record ahead of august elections

Meru Governor Kiraitu Murungi launched a blistering attack on his critics and rivals while making his state of the County address at Meru County Assembly on Wednesday.

Kiraitu, who is seeking re-election in the upcoming general elections, called residents to judge his administration by its achievements since attaining the County leadership.

“We shall all have opponents like ciomaragara who will be moving from village to village cheating the people that we have done nothing. There will be many prophets of doom and agents of confusion spreading lies and propaganda so that they can be elected. Let us not waste this financial year on empty politicking and negative energy. Let us rise above the noise,” Kiraitu said.

Kiraitu who joined Raila Odinga’s Azimio La Umoja camp warned residents against concentrating on the national politics at the expense of the county politics.

“Mr Speaker Sir, we have tried our best. As expected, political activities and political temperatures will continue to rise as we approach 2022. There has been too much focus on national politics and presidential candidates, and too little focus on candidates at the County level, and their dreams for the County,”Kiraitu said.

The Meru governor listed projects done by his government across the County consisting of drilling of boreholes, construction and upgrading of roads and health care centers such as cancer center and new dispensaries, ECDE classes and cabropaving of Meru urban centers and markets among other other developments.

This comes amid a battle for control of the region by his gubernatorial competitors Meru senator Mithika Linturi and Meru Woman Representative Kawira Mwangaza.

“Mr. Speaker Sir, we have established an all-inclusive Government, with CEC members, CO’s, Directors and staff from all the three sub-tribes and regions of Meru. I have appointed people from Igembe, Tigania and Imenti to senior positions in my Government, which reflects the true face of Meru,”the Meru Governor added.

He noted that his government has managed to disburse Sh 2. billion to the wards in the last four years in bid to support developments in the wards.

Mr Kiraitu added that through creation of Meru Economic and Social Council (MESC), which he termed as a high-level think tank made of the best intellectuals, professionals and entrepreneurs of Meru, his government has been able to identify various flagship projects saying that they are being implemented.

“We have also established many advisory boards and committees such as market committees, water committees and bursary committees, to enhance community participation in our programs. Meru County Government is a people’s Government. It is truly a Government of the people of Meru, by the people of Meru, for the people of Meru,”Kiraitu said.

He further said his government has managed to drill 195 high yielding solar powered boreholes especially in the semi-arid areas of Buuri, lower Imenti, Igembe and Tigania regions at a total cost of Kshs. 1.071 billion.

Drumming support for his government Kiraitu said his government will be drilling, equipping, rehabilitating and solarizing 45 boreholes in this financial year.

“This will translate to 240 boreholes at the end of our 5-year term. We have also constructed 17 gravity water and irrigation projects at a total cost of Kshs. 230 million benefitting over 30,000 households. 1200 community water projects have been supported by my Government with tanks, pipes and construction of intakes at a cost of over Kshs. 282 million,” Kiraitu said.

He added that his government has invested over Sh 35 Million in boosting agriculture.

“My Government has invested over Kshs. 535 million with over 95 percent of this money going directly to the farmers. So far, we have procured and supplied 223,0000 macadamia and avocado seedlings, compared to 98,000 avocado seedlings supplied by the previous government. We have supplied 28 metric tonnes of certified seed potatoes to potato farmers,”he added.

Kiraitu also noted that his government has commenced construction of a mango processing plant in Mwanganthia and a banana winery plant and Sh 16 million construction of a value addition facility at Abogeta West ward.

He also noted that his government has been capitalizing on boosting tourism through constructing of a 22 kilometres road leading to Lake Ellis, in Mount Kenya and holding a number of events on the Lake Ellis route including 4 x 4 challenge to encourage people to visit the lake among other initiatives.  He added that his government is developing Lake Nkunga as a prime picnic, and family entertainment facility, which will include boat riding, hiking and a zip line, and an arboretum to boost tourism in Meru Municipality.

Other developments that the Meru governor outlined included disbursing of Sh 562 million to bursaries and construction of 290 ECDE classrooms. Grading of 2,400 kilometres of roads, and 605.5 Kilometers murammed roads among other developments.

Mr Kiaitu said lack of land ownership documents has inhibited development in most parts of Tigania, Igembe and Buuri. He added that his Government in conjunction with the National Government will facilitate survey, dispute resolution and issuance of title deeds to the residents of Ankamia, Ruiri Rwarera, Kiirua Nkando, Mweru, Rikiau, Amwathi, Amung’enti, New Kiare and Mbwaa adjudication sections of Meru.

Kiraitu further noted that his government has facilitated training of 1,800 boda boda riders on road safety and entrepreneurship

The Meru governor said his government has managed to establish and fund Meru Youth Service which is an initiative to fight poverty, unemployment and hopelessness among the youth. According to him the MYS program has trained 1600 youths on various courses.

He also noted that his government has been embarking on an urbanization program in a bid to improve Meru towns and urban centers noting that his government has submitted a proposal into the Assembly seeking elevation of  Maua and Timau Towns into municipalities so that they can benefit from Government and World Bank urban support programmes.
