Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua welcomes Wiper Patriotic Front leader Kalonzo Musyoka for a holding high-level consultations at his Wamunyoro residence

Kenya’s opposition is moving closer to a united front for the 2027 General Election after former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua held separate talks with Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka and DAP-K leader Eugene Wamalwa at his Wamunyoro residence.
The meetings mark the strongest effort yet to consolidate the opposition around a single presidential challenger to President William Ruto. Gachagua said the leaders were focused on forming the country’s “sixth administration” and agreed on the need to rally behind one candidate, even if it requires personal sacrifices.
Wamunyoro has increasingly become the centre of opposition strategy, symbolising Gachagua’s political comeback following his impeachment in 2024. Kalonzo brings influence in Lower Eastern Kenya and a national profile built over decades in politics, while Wamalwa strengthens the alliance’s reach in Western Kenya.
Together, the trio hopes to combine regional support bases into a formidable challenge against Ruto, who continues to bolster his own political position through cooperation with ODM and a broad-based government arrangement.
However, history offers a warning. Previous opposition coalitions, including NASA and Azimio, struggled to survive internal rivalries. Beyond unity, the emerging alliance must also convince voters it has credible solutions to pressing concerns such as the cost of living, unemployment, taxation and governance.
With the 2027 race drawing nearer, the battle lines are becoming clearer.
