From dressing-room drama at Arsenal to Hull City’s surprise defensive resilience, Matchweek 4 promises an absorbing weekend of football

The Premier League rolls into Matchweek 4 carrying more than the usual early-season energy. From Mikel Arteta firing back at a former player to Xabi Alonso facing the division’s most surprising defensive wall in newly promoted Hull City, the weekend arrives loaded with storylines that could begin to shape the table.
With the season still young, every point is starting to carry extra weight.
Drama erupted at Arteta’s press conference yesterday when the Arsenal manager found himself in the firing line. Gabriel Jesus, who recently completed a move to Barcelona, publicly alleged he had been forced to train alone before his exit from the club.
Arteta pushed back, saying he was surprised by the Brazilian’s claims. He dismissed any narrative of a toxic dressing room by pointing to Leandro Trossard’s recent visit to the Emirates Stadium after his own departure.
The situation adds another layer of scrutiny around Arsenal, who have started the campaign strongly. Arteta will be hoping the off-field noise does not distract his squad as they travel to the Stadium of Light on Saturday to face Sunderland, looking to protect a perfect nine-point start to the season.
Chelsea, meanwhile, welcome newly promoted Hull City — arguably the most surprising side in the division so far. Hull currently sit third in the table, built on a defensive record that has already drawn widespread attention. Without midfielder Moisés Caicedo, who is sidelined with a calf injury, Alonso must find a way to dismantle a defensive unit that has shown it can frustrate top opponents. Chelsea will need patience and creativity to break Hull down.
Saturday evening also features Liverpool against Fulham, with Álvaro Arbeloa returning to Anfield as a visiting manager. Fulham sit at the bottom of the table after three successive defeats, though it may be too early to write off Arbeloa’s approach. Fulham need a result badly; Liverpool will be keen to capitalise on their opponent’s difficult start and maintain their own momentum.
Roberto De Zerbi is feeling the pressure at Tottenham. Despite a summer outlay reported at around £300 million, Spurs remain winless. They face a desperate Everton side on Saturday, though De Zerbi received a boost yesterday with confirmation that James Maddison is fully fit to start. Tottenham will be under pressure to convert their attacking talent into points, making this another defining test for their new manager.
Elsewhere on Saturday, Crystal Palace host Ipswich Town, while Bournemouth face Brentford. Palace will look to build on recent positive form when Ipswich visit, while the Bournemouth-Brentford fixture promises to be tight, with both clubs viewing it as an opportunity to collect valuable early-season points.
