CHANGE OF GUARD AT THE BUREAU OF EAC SPEAKERS AS HOUSE CHIEFS CONVENE IN NAIROBI

- In accordance with Rules of the Bureau, the chair of the Bureau is held in rotation. Wetang’ula handed over the leadership of the Bureau to the Jemma Nunu Kumba, Speaker of the Transitional National Legislature of the Republic of South Sudan; the leadership of the Bureau is a role which he inherited from the former National Assembly Speake Justin Muturi.

The Speaker of the National Assembly Moses Masika Wetang’ula together with his Senate counterpart Amason Jeffah Kingi co-hosted the 14th Meeting of the Bureau of East Africa Community (EAC) Speakers.
During the Friday meeting, Wetang’ula lauded the unity of the Bureau of EAC Speakers noting that Africa has common history, successes and challenges that more often than not, cement the relationships of Partner States.
The Clerks of E.A.C National Assemblies and the East African Legislative Assembly had convened in Nairobi for their 15th meeting ahead of the 14th Meeting of the Bureau of East African Community (EAC) Speaker’s convention to deliberate on various programmes and firm up on the Agenda of the Bureau’s meeting.
In accordance with Rules of the Bureau, the chair of the Bureau is held in rotation. Wetang’ula handed over the leadership of the Bureau to the Jemma Nunu Kumba, Speaker of the Transitional National Legislature of the Republic of South Sudan; the leadership of the Bureau is a role which he inherited from the former National Assembly Speake Justin Muturi.

The outgoing Speaker of the East African Legislative Assembly (EALA), Martin Ngoga hailed Bureau Speakers for great cooperation during his tenure and encouraged the Member states to actively participate in Bureau regional fora for the benefit of Member legislative assemblies.
Noting that the term of the 4th Assembly of EALA was coming to a close on 17th December 2022, the Speaker implored upon each partner State to hasten the conclusion of the election process so that the 5th Assembly is constituted in good time.
In her acceptance speech, Kumba appreciated the opportunity to lead the Bureau for the next two years saying that it was an honor and a great opportunity for the people of the Republic of South Sudan to lead the EAC region in advancing the spirit of togetherness and coexistence.
On his part as the co-host of the meeting, Kingi reminisced his service as a Minister in the then Ministry of East African Cooperation and acknowledged that the Bureau has indeed made tremendous progress to deserve official recognition into the structure of the East African Community. “There is need to recognize the contribution of the EAC Speakers Bureau in the region and formally adopt the Bureau in the structure of EAC as one of the organs of the East African Community”, said Kingi.
The EAC House Chiefs have called for regional integration, free trade across national borders in the regional, modalities of mitigating climate change, security and peace in the region particularly humanitarian aid focusing on ways and means of assisting the DRC regains political stability to advance democracy and development in the region.
The EAC Bureau of Speakers has also deliberated on the need to formulate legislative instruments that enable the implementation of the decisions of the summit among its Partner States.
Wetang’ula together with his Senate counterpart the Rt. Hon. (Sen.) Amason Jeffah Kingi, have co-hosted the 14th Meeting of the Bureau of E.A.C Speakers in Nairobi. During the meeting, Speaker Wetang’ula lauded the unity of the Bureau of EAC Speakers noting that Africa has common history, successes and challenges that more often than not, cement the relationships of Partner States.
