A section of senior clergy under the umbrella of Association of Pentecostal and Evangelical Clergy have condemned the planners of the impeachment motion against Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua. According to the leaders led by Reverend Fredrick Ngugi who is the Association’s National Chairman, the motion is likely to overturn the will of Kenyans. The religious leaders also raised their views on other issues like the Religious Organizations bill 2024. They noted:
“we categorically reject the Religious Organizations Bill 2024 currently before the Senate, and demand its immediate withdrawal. The Bill is not only retrogressive and punitive but also infringes on the Constitutional separation of Church and State, as outlined in Article 8 of the Constitution of Kenya 2010. It further violates freedom of worship, enshrined in Article 32, by introducing arbitrary changes to the way religion and belief are expressed through worship, practice, teaching and observance, contrary to both Biblical principles and the Constitution. We reject the Bill in its entirety.”
They cited some dangerous provisions of the Bill noting that the bill seeks to regulate religious practice by imposing excessive fines of upto five million shillings and prison terms of upto three years for religious leaders who violate its subjective provisions.
