The Communications Authority of Kenya (CA) marked Safer Internet Day 2025, a global event aimed at promoting safer and more responsible use of digital technology. This year’s celebration, themed “Empowering Digital Transformation: Amplifying Technical Tools for a Safer Online World,” emphasized the vital role of digital solutions in safeguarding online spaces for all users.
In his keynote address, PS Edward Kisiang’ani representing Cabinet Secretary Ministry of Information Communications and the Digital Economy William Kabogo, highlighted that the Kenyan government is unwavering in its commitment to fostering a safe, inclusive, and secure digital environment for all our citizens.
“Today, I am pleased to highlight some of the key initiatives we have undertaken to ensure that our people, particularly children and vulnerable groups, are protected as they navigate the online world. The National Cybersecurity Strategy (20222027) was launched in 2022 to address emerging cyber threats and protect our critical information infrastructure. This strategy is a roadmap that focuses on governance, policy development, and capacity building to counter cyber risks and enhance public trust in our digital systems.” He remarked
He also added that the Kenya National Digital Master Plan (2022-2032) launched in 2021, is a blueprint that outlines the country’s digital transformation strategy.
“ The plan focus on digital government, digital economy, digital society, and digital infrastructure is aimed at leveraging technology to accelerate economic growth, enhance service delivery, and improve the quality of life for Kenyans.” Added Kisiang’ani.
Mr David Mugonyi, Director General Communications Authority of Kenya (CA), noted like every social and economic platform ever created, the internet is a two sided phenomenon, one hand it’s bursting with transformative power and potential, but on the other, it represents a real danger to all those who use it.
“ The internet represents danger to all who use it. Online harms include illegal/harmful content, online abuse, fraud and cyberbullying. As a developing economy, Kenya must straddle this dual reality. In recognition of the immense potential of digital connectivity, we are investing significant resources to lay a digital super highway consisting of a 100,000km fibre optic cable across the country. To augment this infrastructure, we are also setting up 1450 digital hubs to ensure our people have a way to access the Internet for commercial and other social purposes.” He remarked.
He further emphasized that parents have a crucial role to play in regulating their children’s online activities, urging them to be vigilant and responsible in overseeing what their children engage with on the internet.
“In today’s digital world, it is essential that parents take an active role in guiding their children and ensuring that they are not exposed to harmful content. “Said Mugonyi
The event brought together key industry players, experts, and stakeholders who shared invaluable insights into the importance of fostering a secure digital environment. Discussions focused on the ever-evolving landscape of online threats and the innovative technical tools available to enhance online safety, with a particular emphasis on protecting vulnerable groups such as children and young internet users.
As Kenya continues to embrace digital transformation, the Communications Authority insist that they remain committed to fostering a secure and inclusive online environment, where every user, especially children, can explore the vast opportunities of the internet without fear of harm.
