Antonio Conte
By Kevin Kemboi
Spurs have three high quality central defenders who suit Conte’s system to a tee but their depth behind Romero, Dier and Davies is really poor. Sanchez and Tanganga are bomb scares in possession and Roden is too lightweight to ever make it. This are huge gaping holes that are supposed to be filled by any elite side aspiring to lift the title.
They arguably need two centre backs.
Not overly aware of Bastoni but a Left Centre Back who is right footed and exceptional in possession seems like the most sense as a versatile option for Conte as he could fill in as the starting LCB or in the other two centre back position should Romero or Dier get injured or need a rest.
Their also light within the front three. Spurs have Champions League football and only have 4 forwards for 3 positions in Kane, Kulusevski, Son and Lucas. With their new signing Ivan Perisic who we are yet to find out if he will play wingback or join the attack.
Luis Diaz would have been an incredible signing for them to play in at left wing and striker. Jesus or Richarlison are similar versions but good at best.
Either way, Conte is targeting all of the right positions and profiles and is building the ideal squad for himself to succeed. If this team played in Italy, they’d walk the league. Thing is, they’re up against Klopp and Pep so unfortunately the ceiling for the project is third.
Spurs’ first choice XI is incredible and goes toe to toe with any team in the world. Their squad is also coming along really well depth and profile wise. Conte has done a top job in a short period of time. However, they’re too passive in settled defensive play and that gets punished.
Spurs fans always lose their heads when this is said but it’s the reality of the situation.
Conte is an amazing coach and builds amazing teams but they’re just not quite amazing enough to eclipse Klopp and Pep to win a league, and they’ll fall further behind when the likes of Arteta and Ten Hag get a full squad.
The same issue will rear its head in Europe when Spurs are too easy to keep the ball against and although Son and Kane enable Spurs to win any game, they will be undone eventually by teams who suffocate them in all phases of play, particularly technically with time on the ball.
It is possible to say that Conte is an amazing manager in all aspects and has done an amazing job at Spurs but will likely leave without winning a Premier League title. Does that make him a failure? Obviously not. That’s all I’m saying.
