Crucial Permits and licenses within the sub-county veterinary department

Permits are for short time use, while licenses are for prolonged use.
- A movement permit is issued to transport livestock such as cattle, sheep, goats, and pigs and given when moving the above species from one point to another. They are offered at fifty shillings on each sheet. It is issued from the office from which the animals originate.
- No objection permits: It is issued from the receiving end or from where the animal is going to, the end user area. It is free of charge; it helps in disease control. Suppose there is an outbreak the movement is restricted. Its validity depends on distance.
- Veterinary health certificate: usually issued by the company scouts which is buying.
- Slaughter license: issued after inspection of slaughterhouse or slab after fulfilling the hygiene requirements. It is valid for one year.
- Certificate of transport: it is issued at the slaughterhouse or slab to allow transport of meat. It costs around twenty shillings.
- Meat transport permit: it is issued to the meat boxes or containers transporting meat after meeting the hygienic requirements like painting, repairs, waterproofing, aluminum, or stainless-steel lining. It costs around one hundred shillings. It is valid for one year.
- Authority to distribute bull semen: it is a license to inseminators. It is valid for one year at around one thousand, five hundred shillings.
- Slaughterman’s license: it is issued to slaughter men after satisfying the following;
- Being medically fit; has a valid medical certificate.
- Competent in flaying to avoid cuts and damage to hides and skins, which lead to losses.
- Must be able to maintain personal hygiene; short hair, short nails, and proper attire (should be clean always and white for gumboots, overall, and cap). The renewal fee per year is a hundred shillings.
- Slaughterman’s license folder is a holder for storing slaughterman’s license. It costs two hundred and fifty shillings. It lasts for many years.
- Dispatch note: it is a movement permit that allows transportation of hides and skins. It describes the quantity and grades of the hides and skins. It represents the source and receiver end. It is issued to licensed coat or skin traders when they want to transport hides or skins to the tanneries.
- Registration of premises certificate: it is issued to the hides or skin trader approving they are suitable for suspension, drying, and wet salting. Waste management, salt treatment disposal, and other requirements are enforced. It is valid for one year. It costs around five hundred shillings only.
Other includes:
- Stock trade license
- Condemnation certificate: it gives reasons for condemnation. It is issued at the slaughterhouse and further describes the condemned carcass’s condition. It has the name, signature, and stamp of the inspecting officer. It also has the name of the carcass owner.
- Medical certificate of slaughterhouse license: is valid for six months.
Note that these documents may vary from one county to the other. The costs also may be different from the ones quoted above.
