Democratic Party of Kenya (DP) has reinstated former Cabinet Secretary Justin Muturi as its Party Leader.
The move was effected on Tuesday by the party’s National Executive Council during a special meeting in Nairobi.
The meeting, chaired by the party’s national chairman Essau Kioni resolved to bring back the former Attorney General in its leadership fold, a few months after he was relieved his duties as a State Officer.
Muturi quit the party leadership in September 2022 when President William Ruto appointed him to the country’s Chief Legal Adviser.
Since then, the party’s Deputy Party Leader Ms Veronica Maina has been taking the role.
With the NEC resolution, Muturi thanked the officials, terming the move as a new chapter for the party that was founded by third president of Kenya, the late Mwai Kibaki.
The NEC move is expected to be ratified by the party’s National Delegates Conference that is scheduled to take place, later in the year.
“I sincerely thank the members of the National Executive Committee (NEC) for their confidence in me and their unanimous resolution to reinstate me as the Party Leader with immediate effect, subject to ratification by the National Delegates Convention (NDC) later this year,” Muturi said after the resolution.
He added, “This decision is not just a personal honour, it is a call to action as we work together to rebuild, re-energize, and reposition our party for the future”.
The former Siakago constituency MP further said, “A focused party, united in vision and grounded in purpose, becomes unstoppable in shaping the future.”
The party leader noted that during the meeting that made the resolution, “Our discussions were honest, strategic, and grounded in the lessons of the past. We acknowledged the importance of structured, timely, and principled engagement with like-minded partners; unlike our rushed and poorly arranged coalition entry in the last cycle.
Thw NEC also deliberated on the upcoming Mbeere North by-election that was occasioned by appointment to the Cabinet, the only party MP Geoffrey Ruku who replaced Muturi.
Of the byeletion, Muturi said, “Our resolve is clear: to field a candidate who will represent the true aspirations of the people; not political convenience.”
He noted that Democratic Party remains strong, focused, and committed to building a united platform that puts citizens first.
