A woman in Islam is a system of norms and rules that regulate a woman’s place in Muslim society, as well as a woman’s interaction with social institutions.
The role of women in Islam is a traditional point of criticism of the social structure of Muslim society. In Sharia , the roles of men and women in terms of rights and obligations are significantly different. It describes differences in matters of marriage, divorce, legal rights, clothing and education.
In the Qur’an, women are important figures and topics of discussion in the morals taught in Islam. Most of the women in the Qur’an are described as mothers or wives of prophets. They retained a certain amount of freedom from men in some respects; for example, the Qur’an describes women who accepted Islam before their husbands or women who pledged allegiance to Muhammad independently.
Although the Qur’an does not directly mention any woman by name other than Mary, women play an important role in many chapters. These surahs are manipulated and interpreted harshly both in classical commentaries and in the popular literature of patriarchal societies. The cultural norms that existed within the patriarchy shaped how these societies approached the text and created widespread surahs that set the way for future generations to interpret these surahs and the role of women in the Qur’an. Throughout history, various Islamic interpreters and legislators have constantly reinterpreted the women mentioned in the Qur’an as a result of the prevailing ideology and historical context of the time. Following the rise of modernity and Islamic feminism, many scholars are returning to the original text and reexamining the accepted classical interpretations of women and the role of women in the Qur’an.
Since all prophets named in Islamic literature were men, women are not considered prophets in mainstream Islam today, although many scholars in the past have held different views.
