Kisii County Woman Representative Doris Donya has condemned political violence and called on leaders, security agencies and residents to work together to preserve peace and stability, saying violence only destroys lives and undermines development.
Speaking in Bonchari constituency in Kisii County during church fundraising , Donya said no responsible leader should condone violence, noting that young people are often the ones exploited during political confrontations, leaving their lives and futures at risk.
“As a leader, no one can allow violence to take place because the people involved in violence are our children. Today you could be celebrating that people have been hurt, but you don’t know your tomorrow,” she said.
She urged politicians to exercise restraint during public engagements and avoid inflammatory statements that could incite conflict, emphasizing that leadership should be anchored on dialogue, respect and peaceful coexistence.
The Woman Representative also appealed to security agencies to act firmly against individuals involved in planning or carrying out acts of violence.
“I call upon the security agencies to do their work as leaders we also do our work,” she said.
Donya expressed concern that some politicians were taking advantage of unemployed youth by paying them to engage in violence, warning that such actions expose young people to injuries, arrests and long-term consequences.
“Those our children are being given money so that they do violent things. Please stop it,” she said.
She encouraged young people to reject financial inducements intended to lure them into political violence and instead focus on education, business, employment and other productive activities that would improve their livelihoods.
Reaffirming her personal commitment to peace, Donya recalled that her own office had previously been attacked but said the incident had not changed her position against violence.
“I remember the violence that happened at my office last time, but I still stand firm up to today to condemn violence. I don’t support any violence and I have never been violent,” she said.
She called on all leaders, regardless of their political affiliation, to prioritize the safety and well-being of residents by promoting tolerance and respecting differing political opinions.
Donya said lasting peace requires collective responsibility, urging community members, religious leaders, security agencies and political leaders to work together to prevent violence before it occurs rather than responding after lives and property have already been affected.
She maintained that Kisii County has a proud history of resilience and should continue fostering unity despite political competition, stressing that elections and political activities should never divide communities or lead to bloodshed.
Her remarks come amid growing calls by religious leaders, elders and civil society organizations for politicians to conduct their campaigns responsibly and uphold peace.
Donya urged residents to reject divisive politics, embrace dialogue and protect the harmony that is essential for development and prosperity in the county.
