Over 150 participants from the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) member states, including representatives from the private sector, international organisations, and NGOs, will gather in Djibouti for the 2nd Knowledge Share Fair on the Blue Economy from Tuesday to Thursday next week.
The event, organised by IGAD with support from the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (SIDA), will be held under the theme “Investing in Blue Economy for Regional Integration.”
According to the IGAD secretariat, it aims to promote sustainable Blue Economy development and strengthen regional cooperation to harness marine and aquatic resources for food security, socio-economic growth, and poverty reduction in the Horn of Africa.
The fair will feature exhibitions showcasing the results of regional projects, knowledge-sharing sessions on themes like biodiversity, blue tourism, financing the blue economy, and climate change, as well as field visits.
Discussions from the fair will be compiled into a report to guide future policy and economic decisions for Blue Economy development in the region.
The fair aligns with IGAD’s Blue Economy Strategy and Implementation Plan (BESIP), adopted by member state ministers in 2022. It also supports the African Union’s Blue Economy Strategy, which aims to contribute to sustainable development and economic growth across the continent.
IGAD’s Blue Economy strategy, developed with the financial backing of SIDA, emphasises inclusive growth, aiming to transform the Horn of Africa by leveraging its rich marine and inland water resources.
Kenya, Djibouti, Ethiopia, Somalia, South Sudan, Sudan, Uganda, and Eritrea are the member states participating in IGAD’s efforts to drive Blue Economy initiatives for regional prosperity.
