One of the oldest political parties in the country has formally issued notice to exit President William Ruto’s led Kenya Kwanza (KK) coalition.
Democratic party of Kenya (DP) has notified the relevant institution and partners in the coalition, giving a 30-day notice to quit the ruling coalition.
The notice is contained in a letter dated March 7 and signed by the party’s Secretary General Dr Jacob Haji and chairman Essau Kioni.
A letter provided to the media showed that President Ruto’s United Democratic Alliance (UDA) received the letter yesterday.
The Secretary General confirmed that all other stakeholders in the coalition had also received their copies by yesterday.
The letter, with reference, ‘notice to exit from Kenya Kwanza coalition’ cites “prevailing political developments” as the reason of withdrawing from its membership.
It states, “Kindly take notice that our stay in Kenya Kwanza coalition is no longer tenable due to the prevailing political developments.”
The three paragraph letter further states, “Democratic Party of Kenya, vide this letter hereby gives a 30 day notice to exit the coalition as stipulated in the termination clause (8) in the coalition agreement. This notice is effective from the date of this letter.”
It is copied to the Registrar of Political Parties and Secretary General of Ford Kenya, UDA and Maendeleo Chap Chap political parties.
The move by DP officials comes as President Ruto is expected to make swift changes in his administration, a move that might see its 2022 Presidential aspirant and Public Service Cabinet Secretary Justin Muturi shown the door.
The 30 day notice will expire a few days before the party’s founding chairman, the late Mwai Kibaki’s third memorial ceremony which it is organising in collaboration with the former President’s family.
In the last General Elections where CS Muturi dropped his Presidential bid and the party entered into a coalition with UDA, it managed to secure one Senatorial seat (Embu’s Alexander Mundigi Munyi), one parliamentary position (Geoffrey Ruku Kiringa of Mbeere North) and four Members of Assembly seats from Tana River and Meru counties.
