Businessman Dr Thuo Mathenge yesterday became the first gubernatorial aspirant from Nyeri to formally unveil his principal assistant in the race to be county’s next Chief Executive Officer.
Dr Mathenge revealed he will be going to the August polls with Dr Esther Wanjiru Maina as his running mate.

The industrialist chose his proposed deputy’s home church as his introduction base. This was at Gathathini PCEA Church in Itundu, Kiaruhiu area of Iriaini Ward, Mathira constituency.
While addressing the faithful, Dr Mathenge who is also the national chairman o

f The New Democrats (TND) political party disclosed that he had a list of five potential Deputy governors, two men and three women, whom he took time to scrutinize and subject to rigorous interviews where Dr Wanjiru emerged the winner.

“Dr Esther Wanjiru will be my deputy governor. Once we assume office after the August 9th General Election, we shall steer this country forward together,” he said as he introduced her for first time.
Dr Wanjiru, a scholar was elated by the news saying she was ready and willing to work with Dr Mathenge in uplifting the standards of living of all Nyeri people.
“I have held various positions. I have worked in various places and I have never let anyone down. I will closely work with Dr Mathenge to uplift your standards of living,” she said.
Dr Mathenge was accompanied by among others his party’s Executive Director Michael Mwangi Kibicho.
Other aspirants seeking to takeover the county leadership are expected to make public their deputies in the next two weeks.

These include the incumbent Mwalimu Mutahi Kahiga who is expected to name a deputy after falling out with his deputy Dr Caroline Wanjiru Karugu.
Dr Karugu has not made public her next political move although she was last week appointed Azimio La Kenya Women League Chairperson.

Current Nyeri Senator Eng. Ephraim Maina Kirinyaga who is also seeking to a governor is also expected to name his deputy with opinion leaders opining a youthful person will be his ideal candidate.
Others gunning for the gubernatorial position in the county include economists, Peter Maina Munyiri and Gachara Kamanga alias Anko G of Vision 2030.
