Duale rallies private sector behind health reforms at KHF quarterly meeting

Health Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale yesterday convened the Quarterly Ministerial Health Sector Stakeholders Meeting with the Kenya Healthcare Federation (KHF), bringing together government and private sector leaders to take stock of health reforms and deepen public-private collaboration.
KHF was represented by its Chairperson Kanyenje Gakombe.
Duale reaffirmed that government-private sector partnerships are central to achieving Universal Health Coverage (UHC), saying collaboration remains the surest path to expanding equitable access to quality, affordable and people-centred healthcare.
The meeting reviewed progress on priority reforms covering sustainable health financing, digital health, medical supply chains and the response to non-communicable diseases. Discussions zeroed in on strengthening prevention, early detection, treatment and continuity of care for conditions including cancer, diabetes and cardiovascular diseases.
On pharmaceutical regulation, Duale said reforms at the Pharmacy and Poisons Board have improved transparency, efficiency and oversight. More than 2,596 counterfeit and substandard medical products have been pulled from the market, and permits for parallel importation have been scrapped to protect the integrity of Kenya’s pharmaceutical supply chain.
He also called on the private sector to back the Local Manufacturing Strategy by expanding domestic production of pharmaceuticals and medical products, promoting technology transfer, attracting investment and driving innovation to bolster national health security.
Duale further underscored the importance of the proposed Quality of Care Healthcare Bill, saying it would establish a comprehensive framework to improve patient safety, strengthen service delivery and enhance accountability across public and private health facilities alike.
He invited KHF to participate in the Kenya Health Summit 2026, which will spotlight the country’s health reforms, strengthen partnerships and accelerate progress toward UHC.
The meeting was attended by Principal Secretary for Public Health and Professional Standards Mary Muthoni, Director of Public Health and Sanitation Stephen Muleshe, Kenya Medical Supplies Authority Chief Executive Officer Waqo Ejersa, Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Council Chief Executive Officer David Kariuki, senior Ministry of Health officials and representatives from the private healthcare sector.
