English Language Proficiency Is Declining Among Learners

By MKT Correspondent

Education stakeholders in Kiambu County have expressed concern over the declining proficiency of English among learners, attributed to the overuse of slang.

This was highlighted during an annual contest event at Mary Hill Girls High School in Thika, where school heads emphasised the need to build a strong reading culture and develop self-confidence in the language.

They called for regular contests to foster interaction, competition, cooperation, and socialisation, which are crucial for fostering well-rounded learners.

John Muthiora, Principal of Strathmore School, criticised learners in upcountry schools for lacking exposure to the language due to its largely urban focus.

He called for language policies, teacher reorientation, and access to more reading materials to improve the subject in schools.

Learners, led by Faith Ngugi, praised the contest and urged the Ministry of Education to make such contests a policy for all schools, including those from rural areas and those perceived as disadvantaged.
