Esther Passaris Lauds Gathoni Wamuchomba’s Efforts, Calls for Better Support for Women

Nairobi Woman Representative Esther Passaris has expressed her admiration for Gathoni Wamuchomba’s efforts, particularly during a benchmarking visit to Githunguri to explore effective ways to utilize the National Government Affirmative Action Fund (NGAAF). The visit, coinciding with the ongoing 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence, highlighted the urgent need to address challenges facing women in Kenya.
Passaris noted the alarming rate of violence against women, revealing that 39 women have tragically lost their lives in just the past three months. “We are traumatized as a society,” she said, emphasizing the need for safe spaces and counseling services to support survivors and their families.
The Woman Representative also shone a light on a critical but often overlooked issue: the struggles of pregnant women and new mothers. She stressed that postpartum depression remains one of the least understood conditions in maternal health care.
“We need more beds in maternity wings,” Passaris stated, describing the dire conditions in some hospitals where one nurse is expected to attend to 50 women, leading to burnout and inefficiency. She called for urgent investment in healthcare infrastructure to ensure that women receive proper care both before and after childbirth.
Passaris commended the establishment of call centers, which she described as instrumental in collecting data to better understand and address these challenges. “We must ensure that our systems and infrastructure are designed to support women comprehensively,” she added, urging for reforms that prioritize the well-being of women in every stage of their lives.
Her remarks underscore the broader theme of the 16 Days of Activism campaign: creating a safer, more supportive environment for women and girls across Kenya.
