Makueni Handicraft Value Chain Co-operative Society Limited is not your ordinary Sacco.
Under the wise leadership of Chairman Richard Kamando, the Sacco has brought together handicraft makers in a bid to give them the much needed leverage to boost their business…
However, according to Richard in his interaction with this writer, all has not been rosy. They have had their fair share of challenges chief among them being exploitation by middlemen.
“They come here and buy these marvelous products’ at throw away prices and end up selling them for a good catch including at the international market. This is oppressive and we would urge the government to mitigate this by allowing us to work in synergy with the ministry of trade in order to see to it that we get value for our work,” Mr Richard observed.
He at the same time called upon the government to deal with the non-tariff barriers especially on the gateway to East Africa Community member states.
“When we go for conferences or exhibitions say in Mwanza in Tanzania or recently in Kampala Uganda we would like to be permitted to carry our handicrafts for sale in our sister countries,” he said.
