Patrick Kagunda Karanja, a Gatundu-based Pastor, at the Thika High Court where he pleaded not guilty to murder charges

The High Court in Thika has released a pastor from Gatundu South, Kiambu County on a KSh2 million bond with a surety of a similar amount after pleading not guilty to murder charges.
Patrick Kagunda Karanja who appeared before Lady Justice Florence Muchemi is accused of murdering Francis Gichini on February 3, within Gatundu South sub-county.
Kagunda who is being represented by a battery of lawyers led by Ndegwa Njiru successfully applied for the accused to be granted favorable bond terms arguing that he had been detained for long without being charged by the prosecution.
The defense counsels while making the application argued that the accused person is a pastor who lives with his wife and kid and cannot escape or abscond court proceedings.
They also noted that Kagunda is innocent until proven guilty and should be allowed to enjoy his constitutional rights.
The prosecution led by Principal Prosecution Counsel Esther Torosi and the victim’s counsels led by Karuku Wachira while opposing the bond application told the court that the accused person is likely to interfere with witnesses and evidence if released on bond.
The prosecution also argued that there is public hostility at the home area of the accused person, Ituuru village in Gatundu South, and that his life will be in danger if freed on bond.
However, Lady Justice Muchemi allowed the bond application by the defense and released Kagunda on a KSh2 million bond with a surety of a similar amount. She also directed that the accused person be held at Nairobi Remand until the bond is processed for his release.
The matter will be mentioned on March 25.
