Nyandarua Governor Moses Kiarie Badilisha yesterday conducted an extensive development tour of various ongoing projects in Ol-Joroorok sub-county.
At the Ex-Jacobs dam in Weru ward, which is being funded by the AfDB to the tune of Ksh. 200 million, Governor Badilisha expressed his satisfaction with the progress of the project, under the Small Scale Irrigation and Value Addition Project (SIVAP) which seeks to irrigate an average of 166 hectares of land.
“One way in which we wish to address food security in Nyandarua is through sustainable water solutions and increasing the acreage under irrigation. We cannot fight hunger, improve on livelihoods and create wealth if we rely on rain-fed agriculture,” the County head told local residents.
While engaging them on various development interventions, the Governor promised to address the pending issue of a community borehole which is part of the larger project: “We shall resolve the outstanding issue of the borehole and create a win-win situation.”
The Ex-Jacobs dam project also includes the establishment of the Kagongo Wendani Aggregation Center (Ksh. 23.6 million), a borehole (Ksh. 7.78 million) and access roads running into 33 kilometers (Ksh. 40.3 million).
Later, while visiting the Agriculture Training Center in Gatimu ward, Governor Badilisha was taken through the seeds’ multiplication processes being undertaken at the European Union funded tissue culture laboratory. Under the Change Manifesto, provision of clean and affordable farm inputs is a priority area towards agri-prenuership and wealth creation.
“We will inject more resources to go into research, innovation and climate smart methods of improving our agriculture sector. And one of those areas is in clean seeds, soil testing and extension services. Agriculture will be a driver of development in this County,” the Governor said.
He was accompanied by the County Executive Committee Member James Karitu (Agriculture), Chief Officer Rose Oyolo, Mbogo Mburu (Weru ward), Muigai Wainaina (County Secretary), the Chief of Staff Mr. Peter Thiari among other government officers.
