When financial stability becomes the primary measure of a partner’s worth, something more than romance is lost
By Vanessa Bore
Love was once considered life’s greatest currency. Today, actual currency appears to be winning. Financial stability has become a primary filter in partner selection, particularly among younger generations navigating an expensive world. Social media has accelerated the shift, packaging wealth as romance and presenting luxury holidays and designer gifts as the truest expressions of commitment. When affection is measured by what a partner can afford, something fundamental has changed.
Yet the picture is not straightforward. Wanting a financially stable partner is not the same as being mercenary. Money pays bills, raises children and absorbs life’s shocks. Financial strain is one of the most reliable destroyers of relationships — not because couples stop caring, but because prolonged pressure erodes even genuine affection.
The danger arrives when money stops being a practical consideration and becomes the primary measure of a person’s worth. Relationships built entirely around financial benefit gradually hollow out. Loyalty, honesty, emotional availability and companionship — the qualities that sustain a partnership through real difficulty — cannot be purchased. A person may afford every expensive gift and remain entirely absent.
Romanticising poverty is equally misguided. Love should not demand suffering. The goal is a relationship where financial responsibility and genuine affection reinforce each other rather than compete.
Perhaps the question was never money versus love. Perhaps it was always whether we are mature enough to honestly need both — and humble enough to admit it.
