Collaboration poem from Zimbabwean Poets-
In the giant industry,
We toil, sweat and bleed.
We toil to day’s end,
Skip meals to meet set targets,
Yet still subsist on a miserly pittence.
We live on trivia and survive on debt,
Our being and dignity,
All eroded.
Inflation sends the little to the gallows,
And in penury we drown,
With no more ascension
From this hollow spine of decay;
A freezing and thawing game
Where we get caught
‘tween sevaral deaths of drunken toil
That drowns the master’s sorrow.
Rapacious crocodiles skulk,
Salivate their capitalistic desires
With our immortal grief,
Swindling our tubed dreams
To carapace their lucre,
Yet we crouch to our torn heels
Far from the giant lucrative tree;
Preferent to their supremacy marts
As we keep a vigil in drained silence
To the ever projectile prices!
