Investing In Our Future: Tharaka Nithi County’s Commitment To Early Childhood Education

In today’s rapidly changing world, the foundation of education begins long before a child steps into a primary school classroom.
Recognizing this, the Tharaka Nithi County Government led by Governor Muthomi Njuki has taken significant strides to ensure a conducive learning environment for its youngest learners through the Early Childhood Development Education (ECDE) program.
The county has successfully constructed 185 ECDE classes and recruited 512 trained teachers, all equipped to implement the new national Competence Based Curriculum.
This substantial investment has not only provided a safe and enriching learning environment but has also furnished schools with essential teaching aids, including furniture, stationery, and books across the 15 wards.
The impact of these initiatives is evident in the remarkable transition rate of 98 percent from ECDE to primary schools, benefiting over 28,000 learners and achieving a net rate of 82 percent. These figures underscore the effectiveness of Tharaka Nithi’s approach to early childhood education.
In collaboration with the Kenyatta University Women Empowerment Hub (KU-WEE Hub), the county has secured funding for various roles, including 60 teachers, 33 assessors, four coordinators, 15 mentors, three research assistants, and an intervention supervisor.
This holistic approach reflects the county government’s commitment to fostering economic empowerment and supporting the overall well-being of women in our community.
The collaboration with KU-WEE Hub has also spurred the development of the ECDE curriculum, the provision of ECDE kits, and the initiation of vital policy development.
Additionally, in partnership with esteemed institutions like Yale University, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, and the University of West Indies, the county has undertaken a comprehensive review titled “Randomized Controlled Trial of the Effects of a Pre-school Intervention on Child Learning and Women Economic Empowerment in Tharaka Nithi County.
Precisely, Governor Njuki’s commitment to enhancing ECDE is a testament to his dedication to the community’s future because by investing in education and empowering women, the county is laying a solid foundation for the next generation, ensuring that every child has the opportunity to thrive.
