The Institute of Quantity Surveyors of Kenya (IQSK) has marked a major milestone with the launch of two publications aimed at standardizing and strengthening the practice of quantity surveying across the country.
The Construction Cost Handbook 2025/2026 and the Standards, Procedures and Practices (SPP) Handbook were unveiled on Friday night in Nairobi during IQSK’s 30th Annual General Meeting, which brought together quantity surveyors from across the country—both in person and virtually—to reflect on the Institute’s growth and future direction.
In a statement read on his behalf, Principal Secretary for Public Works Mr. Joel Arumonyang said the handbooks will provide a uniform, regionally responsive framework that enhances accountability and fosters public trust in the built environment. “These books will help resolve cost-related disputes, streamline documentation, and improve the quality of infrastructure delivery,” the statement read.
He added that the publications would enhance cost management, transparency, and professional consistency within Kenya’s construction sector.
The PS commended the IQSK leadership and its members for their unwavering dedication to professionalism and excellence. He emphasized the central role that quantity surveyors play in ensuring value, accountability, and sustainability in Kenya’s dynamic construction industry—particularly in the efficient use of public funds and the timely, budget-conscious delivery of projects.
The Principal Secretary also pledged continued government support for the profession, citing plans to strengthen training and mentorship for young professionals, adopt digital technologies such as Building Information Modelling (BIM), and review policy frameworks to promote excellence in cost management.
“Together, we are not just building infrastructure,” he concluded, “we are building confidence, competence, and a legacy of accountability.”
IQSK President Qs. Mutinda Mutuku, in his address, highlighted the Institute’s resilience and transformation over the past year.
“From humble beginnings in 1994, we have grown into a formidable institution built on ethics, professionalism, and leadership,” said Mutuku. “Over the past year, we have faced economic shifts, staffing transitions, and regulatory changes—but we have emerged stronger, more transparent, and better positioned for sustainable growth.”
Among the key achievements shared was a 10.4% increase in membership—from 2,422 in May 2024 to 2,674 by the end of April 2025—signaling growing interest and trust in the Institute’s mission. The Membership and Training Committees were praised for organizing impactful activities that attracted and retained members.
The Construction Cost Handbook 2025/2026 is a comprehensive resource offering detailed, up-to-date information on the variety and prices of construction materials across the country. The Standards, Procedures and Practices Handbook is a transformative publication designed to modernize and professionalize the quantity surveying field by integrating international best practices and emerging technologies.
