IT’S HIGH TIME MIGORI GOVERNMENT INTERVENES TO CURB CHILD LABOUR
It’s exactly 12 o’clock,Down the hills of kitere,I heard sounds of crushers. Due to curiosity I went near the place to see and know how mining is done. Shocked to see most workers at the mining to be teenagers ,they seemed tired,worn out and hungry. I met 10 years old Hildah otieno who was washing gold with mercury ” I was born in a family of Four. My father Otieno Meshack used to provide everything for us,we never lacked anything, while my motherVivian Onyangi used to do house chores. We were once a happy family.(tears rolling down her cheeks). One day they decided to take us for a trip then the unthinkable happened,we got an accident on our way back(showing the scars she got during the accident).They all died and the only victim that survived the tragic was I.My Aunt Liner who is physically handicapped took me in but because of her condition,I had to drop out of school at least to support ourselves and also have something to eat.Next to Hilder was a young boy Collins Otieno,a 16 year old . Even though he looks older than his years ,his eyes were full of tears,seemed he had a lot to share so that he can be relieved.Since he got lost in contact with his parents,he tried looking for them but to no avail. He has been trying to feed and take care of himself hoping one day he will be able to remember his village.”I have been working here sine I got lost from a road show that was held in kisii some years back. Since we lived in kisii town, I never knew my village, I was a four years old and I really can’t recall how I got myself here in the hills of kitere. I am now employed here,this is where I get my income from. Lifting this heavyweight machines and ensuring that they are working properly, digging deep the mines to find gold is a huge load task for anyone but I have to do this for my benefit, knowing that at the end of the day I will at least get something to eat.
I would like the government of Migori to offer free education and also to form a platform where parents who have lost their beloved ones can be found.This can resolve the problem of increase of street children in town centers and also resolve child labour at large.
